Netflix is coming strong with original programming this May, with a number of hit shows coming back and a new movie.  But, we also get our fair share of cinematic gems, including some all-time classics.  Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in May.

5 – WAR MACHINE (David Michôd, 2017)

War Machine is a Netflix original film and one of their biggest productions to date.  Netflix has been pretty good with their original movies, launching with Beasts of Nation (2015) and continuing strong with The Fundamentals of Caring (2016) and this year’s The Discovery (2017), which is one of my favorite movies of the year so far.  War Machine looks wild, similar in tone to The Big Short (2015) or War Dogs (2016).  Starring Brad Pitt as a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé.  Pitt looks like he’s having a ball in this role, and the rest of the cast, including Ben Kinglsey, Tilda Swinton, Alan Ruck, RJ Cyler, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, and Topher Grace is a stellar supporting cast.  It looks like Netflix might have another hit on their hands.

 

 

4 – HUNTER GATHERER (Joshua Locy, 2016)

You’ve probably never heard of this movie, and that is a damn shame.  Hunter Gatherer is a wonderful little indie film about Ashley (Andre Royo), a man recently released from prison who tries to win back his girlfriend only to find she has moved on.  He then grows a relationship with a troubled young man named Jeremy (George Sample III) and the two start finding ways to make money, even if it may not be entirely legal.  Royo (known for his role as Bubbles in HBO’s The Wire) is sensational as Ashley.  It is heartbreaking to watch him try and try again, only to keep falling on his face.  Sample is terrific as well.  He and Royo have great chemistry and you really buy their friendship.  This is a movie about love, friendship, and determination and a small gem you should check out.

 

 

3 – FORREST GUMP (Robert Zemeckis, 1994)

Last week, I named Forrest Gump as the best Tom Hanks movie, and rightly so.  This is a whimsical, epic, magical, classic movie.  Forrest is an iconic character.  He’s a slow man who happens to stumble into some of the biggest events in American history, like the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and meeting three presidents, all while trying to find his beloved Jenny (Robin Wright).  Hanks gives a sensational performance.  It is funny, sweet, and heartbreaking.  He commits fully to the performance, both physically and mentally, becoming Forrest and changing our idea of who Tom Hanks was as an actor.  People give this movie crap for winning the 1994 Best Picture over Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption, and while I do like both movies better, Forrest Gump is a worthy winner and film that holds up to this day.

 

 

2 – INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (Quentin Tarantino, 2009)

Inglorious Basterds is one of the very best movies of the 2000’s.  Quentin Tarantino’s inventive, delirious, blood-soaked remix of the end of World War II is a remarkable piece of filmmaking.  Filled with rich characters, complex dialog, and a plot that will have your head spinning, this movie gets better and better every time.  Christoph Waltz became and household name for his masterful performance as ‘The Jew Hunter’ Col. Hans Landa and Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances as Lt. Aldo Raine.  The movie is a visual stunner and Tarantino’s best work as a director to date.  This is as brilliant as movies get.

 

 

1 – HOUSE OF CARDS: SEASON 5 (Beau Willimon, 2013 -)

Frank Underwood is back and he is fiercer than ever.  In Netflix’s landmark original series, President Frank Underwood (a legendary Kevin Spacey) and his wife, Claire (an ice cold Robin Wright), are on the election trail after going to war with a terror group known as ICO.  After last year’s real life bizarre election, in which we elected a T.V. personality as our president, I wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow correlated the circus that election was into this season, along with Frank’s usual backstabbing ways.  Coming off the show’s best season since it’s first season, House of Cards is one of the best shows out today and 100% binge worthy.
